MIAMI (AP) - A standup routine by black comedian Eddie Griffin was stopped after he repeatedly used the N-word, a magazine's spokesman said Wednesday.

Griffin, who has appeared in movies such as "Undercover Brother" and "Date Movie" and the TV show "Malcolm & Eddie," was performing at a Black Enterprise magazine event in the Miami suburb of Doral on Friday when he was cut off after using profanities and the N-word, said Andrew Wadium, a spokesman for the publication.

"We believe that ending the performance was the appropriate action," Wadium said.

About 1,000 people registered for the performance.

Griffin's publicist, Jeff Abraham, didn't immediately return an e-mail and a call seeking comment.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, who attended a meeting held by the magazine in Miami but not the performance, said the crowd gave an ovation to Earl Graves, the magazine's publisher, when he came on stage after the 39-year-old Griffin was pulled, according to a statement on the Web site of Sharpton's National Action Network.

The statement said Sharpton "expressed gratitude that the nation's pre-eminent magazine for African-Americans stands behind the efforts of National Action Network in getting rid of the N-word."

Public discussion on the word's use increased last year following a tirade by "Seinfeld" actor Michael Richards, who used it repeatedly during a Los Angeles comedy routine and later issued a public apology.

The issue about racially insensitive remarks heated up earlier this year after talk show host Don Imus described black members of the Rutgers University women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos" on April 4.

At its July convention in Detroit, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People held a mock funeral for the word.

Black leaders, including the Revs. Jesse Jackson and Sharpton, have challenged the entertainment industry and the American public to stop using the N-word and other racial slurs.

Doesn't this amount to censorship? I would think if you went to his show the use of that word is something you would expect. Of course in most settings it is wrong to use that word, but at a comedy show such as his you know it will be used.

Good for them. Having taught young black men a few years back, it was frustrating hearing them constantly call each other by that word and then trying to get them to figure out why they should stop.

I commend whoever got up there and stopped it.:aktion033

I dont get it??? I am the first one to stand up for freedom of speech. Thats what this contry is all about. its the 1st amendment. Any adult should be able to say what ever the want.
Banning words. What a joke.
not to mention, that word needs to be used in a lot of cases. Like songs.

How would this song go if N word was gone.

I still don't understand why it should have been stopped. It's like being offended at a comedy show because they cuss. You know this activity will happen before you buy the tickets. Offended? Don't go to the damn show!

Porno I dont think you get the point.

If Blacks want everyone else to stop saying it they should try themsleves.

If they dont give a shit than anyone with freedom of speech should be able to let it fly.

not going to sit here and say i have never used the word.but to be honest i now find it repulsive.i have some associates that use the word quite often and when they say it,it makes me cringe.i now realize how stupid it sounds coming out of the mouth in a mean way.

not going to say i will not use it tomorrow,as each situation is different.when someone is robbed and murdered by a black i find it hard to hold back.(same with whites though) only a different name called.

or when i see a black woman in line at grocery store with 6 kids running around cart using food stamps to buy them food.same thing with a white woman only different name comes into mind.

I dont think it had anything to do with censorship. I think that E. Griffin should have known his audience a lot better than that. He should have known the difference between Black Enterprise and the Source magazine and should have curtailed his material accordingly. EG shouldn't be upset since I'm sure he got paid for the performance anyway.

One of the reason I am disgust with humanity is striking parallels in illogical responses to using word ****** and publishing pictures of Allah.

I think anyone should be allowed to say whatever they want in a comedy show, no matter how foolish it makes them seem. However, I also believe any comedy club owner should be the one to decide what gets said or not said. After all, it's his business.

The thing I really dislike is political correctness. I hate people trying to shame other people into behaving a certain way as long as no one gets hurt.
